Clazz Quotes

The Amsterdam based Clazz Ensemble is quite a revelation! Superb musicianship, excellent ensemble playing and fresh programming. The Clazz Ensemble has developed attitudes and directions all its own.
Frank Carlberg

The complex, chromatic block chords are sublime. My old ‘Birth of the Cool’ heart bloomed again. Altogether a great reason to compose something for you.
Louis Andriessen

The Clazz Ensemble is one of the best initiatives in recent years.
Jacob ter Veldhuis

(Jazzflits- Jaap Lüdeke 2009)

Classical music meets Jazz music in a fascinating balance.

Music that is forever raising questions as befits high-level art.

(Financieel Dagblad – Hans Dijkstal, 2009)

A contemporary repertoire merging idioms from both worlds in a natural manner.
(Trouw – Armand Serpenti, 2009)

Smooth synthesis.
(Jazzism, Bert Vuijsje, 2009)

It goes without saying that nine windplayers guarantee hurricane force on a regular basis, but the repertoire also allows for experimenting with smaller formations. The Clazz Ensemble illustrates how only an excellent technique can stick to the proper emotions. (Jazzenzo - Rinus van der Heijden, 2009)

His Master's Choice
featuring Louis Andriessen, Jacob ter Veldhuis and
Frank Carlberg

Do you hear the music in a speech by Silvio Berlu-sconi, in the death of Michael Jackson or a tragic Barack Obama, in a fatal family quarrel or in the credit crisis?

In three completely new programs three master-composers show that each of these events inspires beautiful, exciting, up-to-the-minute music. Louis Andriessen, Frank Carlberg and JacobTV work from different musical backgrounds, ranging from classical and jazz to pop.

His Master's Choice is a combination of newly-composed and existing pieces: compositions that connect with the highly original and by public and press acclaimed sound of the Clazz Ensemble. Since 2007 this ensemble has blurred musical boundaries as it proves time and again that sectarianism has no place in 21st Century music. With its twelve musicians the Clazz Ensemble appears to be a small big band. And that it is, but one that treads far beyond the conventional repertoire for that sort of band. These are musicians who feel just as at home performing at the North Sea Jazz Festival as on the classical concert stage.

The Ensemble’s first project Adventures convinced musicians, composers and audiences that this group of top musicians, drawn from classical as well as jazz and improvised music, are involved in a beautiful game wherein they’ve been able to merge composition and improvisation. His Master's Choice is the logical next step.
